Carol Anne Austin TherapistStyle & Approach:

I aim to create a supportive environment which fosters the development of trusting, consistent and collaborative therapeutic relationships with each of my clients. I believe this is the foundation of emotional safety required to be able to fully engage in the therapy process and take the risks necessary to move towards our goals. My style is compassionate, warm and energetic. I use light humour, where appropriate, as a way to defuse tension and allow us to speak from our most vulnerable places.

I see clients for a wide variety of concerns such as, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, stress, assertiveness, family-of-origin concerns, histories of trauma, relationship difficulties and sexual difficulties. I additionally have a specialization in sexual health and work with individuals and couples of all genders, sexual orientations and relationships types. I use an inclusive, anti-oppressive, sex-positive, LGBTQ-positive/queer-positive, strength-based, trauma-informed, harm-reduction set of values in my work.

I do my best to tailor my approach to best meet the individual needs of each person I work with. I use several therapeutic modalities in an eclectic practice drawing from Client-Centered Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Systemic Sex Therapy, Gottman Method Couple Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused Therapy, and Guided Imagery interventions. I encourage and welcome feedback throughout the therapeutic process to ensure my clients feel the strategies we are implementing feel most beneficial to their progress.

Qualifications:

I am a Psychological Associate in Supervised Practice with the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO). My clinical supervisors are Dr. Terry Garling, C.Psych and Dr. Maria Chaparro, C.Psych. I am additionally a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).

There, I was formally educated and trained in individual, group and couples psychotherapy processes in counselling. Prior to this degree, I completed a Masters of Arts in Psychology with a research focus in Human Sexuality at Carleton University.
